Sumayya Usmani Chats Culture, Community & Cakes at SocieTEA

EDINBURGH, UK – (18 May 2017) – The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian welcomes Pakistani-born food writer, broadcaster and cookery teacher, Sumayya Usmani as its special SocieTEA guest speaker on Thursday 1st June to discuss her latest book, ‘Mountain Berries & Desert Spice’.

Influenced by her homeland, Sumayya’s award-winning ‘Summers Under the Tamarind Tree’ (2016), and her recently launched second book are bursting with colourful stories and family recipes. In both books, she explains the sensory journey of discovery she has been exploring through certain ingredients and will share some of her anecdotal stories and inspiration with guests attending this special afternoon tea.

Passionate about Pakistani food and culture, Sumayya will bring to life the rich cuisine and diversity of the dishes she enjoyed growing up in a country that has evolved under the influence of its people over the past 70 years.

Dale MacPhee, General Manager of The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian said: “Food and conversation are the cornerstones of our society, we have become increasingly experimental not just when we eat out, but when we cook for family and friends at home. Sumayya’s enthusiasm for Pakistani food is infectious and we very much look forward to hearing more about her culinary experiences and influences to create what I’m sure will be another award-winning book.”

The Caley launched SocieTEA in 2016 with the aim of bringing interesting speakers to an afternoon tea experience at the hotel, that would inspire guests with stimulating and diverse subjects and conversation.

Tickets for the SocieTEA event on Thursday 1st June are priced at £50 and include a donation to Sumayya’s chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Time: 1-4pm

Venue: The Pompadour by Galvin
